All the gods of all the mythologies have a genesis, a birth, a mother, a father, a lineage to which they can trace back. Shiva has none. He has no gotra as he is not born out of a womb. He never had a mother or a father; he never had ancestors or antecedents to note because he preceded the ability of time to be counted.
Sages say that he is Swayambhu (self-manifested one), who has no first breath nor final breath. There is no beginning and no end for him. All the deities we worship are children of other gods, only Shiva is the eternal one who has no origin nor end. He is not a chapter of the story of the universe. He is the only lord whom we can please only by our devotion. There is no material present in this universe by which we can please the Avadhoota. The Devas and Asuras churned the cosmic ocean to search for the Amrit (nectar of immortality), but the ocean was not easily persuaded to hand it over. First it sent out Halahala - the poison so potent it could have destroyed all of creation. Gods ran away, demons ran, and they were scared.
Only Shiva stood up, swallowed the poison, and saved the universe by not letting the poison spread. The poison blazed so hot that it left his throat blue for life, and he became known as Neelkanth. The gods dropped sacred Ganga water over him to cool him off, as it was very hot. That was one instance of devotion, and it was called Abhishekam, and it's said the skies are still trying to appease him year after year with the rains of Sawan.
